JOCS FLORALS WINNER FOR THEATRE IN ENGLISH 2014

... and the winner for the best play in English in the Jocs Florals contest goes to.... Pablo Brando. Congratulations.
This is his play...

Romeo and Juliet

The play starts with a Street brawl between Montague and Capulet servants

Capulet servants: - Kill them all! For the sake of our masters!

Montague servants: - Leave no prisoners!

Prince Escalus of Verona: - Are these guys really fighting again?! For god’s sake, all the joy I was having in this sunny day in my loved land… This has come to an end.

Prince Escalus of Verona: - Montague! Capulet! It has been enough! As the voice of authority in Verona, I declare that any further breach of the peace between your two families will be punishable by death! No more fights, no more suffering! Wouldn’t you rather be chilling out in your houses? Leave now! And remember, no more fights!

Later in the day Count Paris, a handsome and wealthy man, visits Lord Capulet, the patriarch of the Capulet family

Paris: - I mean… I really like Juliet… I want to become her joyful bride …

Lord Capulet: You want to marry my daughter!? Who do you think you are!? She’s way too young to even consider marriage! You look like a reasonable man, I will consider your proposal, but you won’t marry her until two years are passed.

Paris: - Two years?! That’s way too much sir! Come on, at least let me meet her…

Lord Capulet: Foolish chill! You don’t know who are you talking with! But actually, I’m setting up a party, a ‘’family ball’’ they call it… Any way you can come if you wish so. And you also have my permission to try to make Juliet fall in love with you. I bet you won’t though…

Paris: It’s on! Thanks for the chance sir. Later!

The night of the ball arrived, Juliet talks with Lady Capulet and her nurse.

Lady Capulet: - Oh my lord Juliet! You saw how handsome and polite was that guy you were talking with?!

Juliet’s nurse: -Like super cute!

Lady Capulet: - You should consider knowing him better dear.

Juliet: Ugh, he was awful! I talked to him for like 3 minutes and I already want to kill myself. There’s no way I’m even meeting him again.

Lady Capulet: - You remind me of when I was young. I never meant to marry your father dear, it just happened, it had to happen.

Juliet: Well mom, it won’t happen again. Now let me enjoy the ball.

Meanwhile, Benvolio talks with his cousin Romeo, Montague's son.

Romeo: I’m so pissed off cousin, my life sucks.

Benvolio: Oh come on Romeo! It doesn’t! You’re a handsome, poetical guy with a lot of future!

Romeo: Does that even matter? Is life even worth without someone to love? I think it’s not my friend.

Benvolio: Well, it’s your lucky day then! I know one pretty lady who you might be interested with. There’s a problem though…

Romeo: What?! I would do anything!

Benvolio: She’s a Capulet… She’s called Rosaline. There’s only one way for you to meet her, and it’s sneaking to the Capulets ball today. You’ll get in trouble if they recognize you. Consider the risk.

Romeo: I told you Benvolio, life is meaningless without some fun! Thanks cousin.

Romeo attends the ball at the Capulet house in hopes of meeting Rosaline.

Romeo: Where could she be?  (To Juliet) Excuse me lady… Oh wow.

Juliet: Oh, hey. I’m Juliet. Where’s the ghost?

Romeo: -Sorry…?

Juliet: - Yeah, you look like you just saw a ghost!

Romeo: -No, no… I was just… amazed. I’m Romeo, pleased to meet you. Perhaps you would give me the honor to dance with you, Juliet.

Juliet: Oh, sure!

Juliet's cousin, Tybalt, is enraged at Romeo for sneaking into the ball

Tybalt: That man over there, he’s a Montague! What is he doing in our ball!? I shall kill him for the honor of the family.

Capulet: Stop it Tybalt. I don’t wish to shed blood in my house. You must wait for him to leave then decide what to do.

After the ball…

Romeo sneaks into the Capulet house and overhears Juliet.

Juliet: Oh my crazy hearth! Oh my silly brain! Why do you have to fall in love with no one else than the Montague child! This love will kill me, and I can’t even talk to him. Romeo was his name. Why am I so miserable!

Romeo: You can talk to me Juliet! But you don’t need to. We both feel the same. I love you without any doubt, and I don’t care what our families think, I just know I love you, and that’s not going to change. In fact, let’s marry today. I’ll meet you when the sun sets.

Juliet: The wait will kill me Romeo!

With the help of Friar Laurence, who hopes to reconcile the two families through their children's union, they are secretly married the next day.

Tybalt, later on…

Tybalt: Montague! Don’t even think I forgot about you sneaking into our family ball. You will receive the punishment you deserve now. I’m going to kill you!

Romeo: I won’t fight you Capulet! That would mean my exile, and it’s not worth for your miserable life.

Mercutio, a close friend of Romeo is offended by Tybalt's insolence.

Mecutio: I will kill you then! You are not allowed to talk like this to Montague’s son. You shall now die!

Mercutio is fatally wounded when Romeo attempts to break up the fight. Grief-stricken and wracked with guilt, Romeo confronts and slays Tybalt.

Romeo: What have I done!? I will have to leave this land now or they will kill me! I need to see Juliet again. If I lose her, my life won’t make sense anymore.

 In Juliet's chamber…

Romeo: Oh Juliet… something terrible has happened. I slain your cousin Tybalt I will have to leave this land forever.

Juliet: Oh my Romeo… Why is life giving us so many problems? I have bad news as well. My family decided that I must marry Count Paris, that I must become her ‘’joyful bride’’ or else I will be disowned and rejected.

Romeo: Let’s leave then! Let’s escape this stupid world and live our own story.

Juliet: Yes! I was wondering if you were whiling to do it. Let’s do it tomorrow though… I want to have some fun tonight… We need to consummate our marriage you know…

Romeo: Consu… What?

Juliet: Don’t talk anymore. We’ll talk about our escape when we meet tomorrow. Now let’s enjoy our marriage.

Juliet visits Friar Laurence for help, and he offers her a drug that will put her into a deathlike coma for "two and forty hours."

Juliet: Remember, oh Friar, you must tell Romeo the plan.

Friar Laurence: Yes, don’t even worry about it Juliet. Drink it now.

Juliet:  I will be always in debt with you. (Sleeps in the family crypt).

The messenger, however, does not reach Romeo and, instead, Romeo learns of Juliet's apparent death.

Romeo: No! What is this!? Juliet’s death!? Why, oh god, why you had to do this?! Nothing is left now, nothing is worth.

Paris: You! Montague! What are you doing in Capulet’s crypt?! All the Montague are vandals. You shall now die.

Romeo: I’m tired of this shit. My anger is going to be calmed by killing you now, Paris.

In the ensuing battle, Romeo kills Paris.

Romeo:  Sadly there’s still no hope. I can’t no longer fear death, I’ve died a thousand times. I’m just a waste for the universe; I don’t deserve living like this.

He drinks the poison. Juliet then awakens.

Juliet: What!? Romeo!? He’s death! What in the heavens!? I guess god didn’t want me to be happy, I guess this is just a punishment. Well, fuck you god, I’m not suffering any more.

Juliet stabs herself with Romeo’s dagger.

The feuding families and the Prince meet at the tomb to find all three dead. Friar Laurence recounts the story of the two "star-cross'd lovers". The families are reconciled by their children's deaths and agree to end their violent feud.

The best Ghost Stories

Enjoy yourselves while reading them.

The other side of the mirror

I wake up before the sunrise, I breathe deeply and I sigh, “One more night” I say to myself. I walk around the room and I don’t see anything strange, “Come on! There’s nothing here, it was just a dream, real” I try to convince myself. I walk slowly to the bathroom, and I don’t switch on the light, my head is going to explode and that’s enough. When I’m on the door I recheck the new room: “relax” I retell myself. I walk to the bathroom sink, and I stop in front of it. I open the tap and I hinder the gush and I remove my limb immediately, “so cold” I think. I move the tap and I wet my face three times and I watch the mirror, my facial expression starts changing. It expresses horror or hate, I don’t really know.

-Hi, again- says the mirror figure to me
-Go out! - I threaten her.
-We’ve got to stay together.
-Never again- I say angrily.
-You need me, accept it.
-Shut up! - I scream at her and I punch the mirror with my fist.
- If you are not with me, you won’t stay with any one- she says screaming.
-No! - I immediately shout but it’s so late. She is stabbing herself with a piece of mirror.
-Forever together- she laughs.

The Madhouse

I was watching TV when someone called me. I ran to take the phone and I said: -Hello?- but nobody answered me. I suspected that it was a joke, and I went on watching TV again. A few seconds later, someone called me again. I took the phone and I said: -Please, this is not funny, don’t call me again.- but someone answered me: -Please! I need help! They want to kill me! They want to kill me! Jane! Jane! Please…- and then the call finished. She was my cousin, Jade. Who wanted to kill her? I was very worried. When I turned back I saw something that scared me a lot. Someone had written on my TV: ‘’you are the next’’. I ran to see what this was, and I discovered that it was made with blood. I was very afraid, and I decided to call my cousin Jade. Nobody answered me. I turned my face again, and I saw something in the sofa: -Jade? Jade! Is it you?- I ran to see her face, but when I arrived at the sofa, nobody was sitting. Someone was in my house, and it wasn’t my cousin. I ran all around the house, and I couldn’t find anything.  Then I listened to something from the bathroom. It was like water. I entered very quickly, and I saw a girl having a shower: -Who are you?-. She turned her face. I was very surprised, but she didn’t have eyes, nose or mouth. I closed my eyes and I opened them again. I was dreaming, it was just a dream. When I opened them again the girl was not in the shower…
-And you say that you see her everyday, right?- said the doctor.
-Of course! She is my friend!- I said.
-Okay, welcome to the Madhouse…

who killed Michael?

Els alumnes de 4t d'ESO han estat treballant sobre l'ús dels linking words a la classe d'anglès. Us ensenyem una mostra del que són capaços de fer amb una mica d'imaginació i en anglès. Enjoy yourselves while reading it.

More or less  a year ago these tragic images were broadcast live all around the world.

On the 28 th of December 2010, Michael Bradley’s F-1 car exploded two laps before finishing the Turkish F-1 race.

The images caused a great effect on the spectators, and the whole world was in mourning for days. The fact is that in the explosion, Bradley obviously died: his body was disintegrated so the family couldn’t even offer a decent funeral, although tributes rained in from all over the world, from the simplest man in the street to the British Prime Minister himself.

Naturally a year after the accident, most people had forgotten his death, but the fact is that the police have finished the investigation they opened after the accident. The conclusions they got to after a year of investigation is that Bradley’s lover, Samantha Hawk, slew him.
The video cameras in his team box, the witnesses, the evidence and finally Samantha’s confession helped the police tot solve this mystery.

It all started two days before the race, in a hotel in Istanbul. Michael and his lover were staying in the Presidential Suite. Samantha was sleeping but suddenly she woke up as she heard a weird noise in the room next door. She crept to the door and silently opened it and peeped in, she saw Bradley viciously attacking the furniture. She decided to stop the violence, she ran into the room shouting and screaming. Then Michael turned round and hit her, he spat and insulted her. Finally he punched her in the face, that’s why her upper lip started to bleed – the police managed to link the blood they found on the carpet were she had been bleeding to those traces of violence. Then she stood up and confronted Michael, she managed to relax him, after having shouted at him for a while. Michael was very upset and he started weeping at her feet, but she didn’t forgive him.

On Sunday, the day of the race, Samantha had decided she was going to murder her lover, she just couldn’t stand violent men. She was going to put a bomb under his car.
As a matter of fact, she actually thought she wouldn’t leave any proves. So an hour before starting the race she appeared in his team box knelt down next to his car and stuck the bomb just under the petrol tank. Naturally the bomb exploded and Michael died.
After the police made the announcement they went to Samantha’s house and arrested her, and as she was led away handcuffed with a blanket over her head, she was heard to shout “I really did love him, but he had this odd obsession about attacking sofas, it just wasn’t normal; one day it was a sofa but the next … a person”

Frankly speaking they were both a pair of loonies, undoubtedly, Samantha will spend a considerable number of years in prison. The news have spread like a wild fire on the Facebook and Twitter, and it is now on the front pages of most newspapers.

A scary story

Els alumnes de 4t d'ESO han escrit unes redaccions amb l'objectiu d'usar el nou vocabulari après al llarg del trimestre. La següent ha estat triada pel ells mateixos com la més original. Enjoy yourselves while reading it!.

This story happened in May although I don’t remember the day. I was sleeping in my bed when I awoke because someone had lit the light in my room.

Suddenly my brother arose. He told me that a thief had probably got into our house. First I didn’t believe him but when he swore that we weren’t alone my heart started beating faster.

I turned off the light and I opened the door slowly. In this moment, my brother whispered me he was bearing a lantern. I thought that the thief was on the first floor so I clung to the banister and I led my brother downstairs. But in the last step I fell off and my nose started to bleed. My brother knelt down and asked me if I was OK.
I needed to lie on the floor for one second. I saw the cause of the fall and immediately I bound my shoelaces.
My brother started to creep to the living room.
All of a sudden the front door burst open and the lights were lit. In this moment three policemen arose in the house. The thief tried to flee but the police didn’t let him.

Before the police dropped the thief into the van, he spat on our garden. Then they told us that he was seeking our jewelry because he needed to buy a ticket to fly to another country and that he was fleeing from the police.
His story was that he had slain an important minister and when he was taken by the police to jail, he managed to escape thanks to the fact that the car doors were open because the car had fallen into a hole.
It was the scariest day of my life.
